Duplex Audience Reviews

Smartorhypo Highly Overrated But Still Good
Moustroll Good movie but grossly overrated
Odelecol Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
Haven Kaycee It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
michaelbiland I'm actually quite shocked that this movie is as underrated as it is!This movie has a simple but interesting plot which is: A couple named Alex and Nancy move into a duplex in Brooklyn New York with and old lady who lives on the second floor above them. This old lady seems kind and innocent at first impressions, but pretty soon her constant demands and accidents ruin Alex and Nancy's attempts at having the perfect home. This is a very well done Black comedy movie with some slap stick humour from time to time (don't let the slap stick comedy put you off from watching this, it's done effectively in my opinion but this is probably the reason why this movie is so overlooked including the simplistic plot). You really begin to hate the old lady very quickly too, which is fantastic for a movie like this and you really care about Alex and Nancy's intentions to get her out of the duplex no matter what the costs are or how they are going to do it, this is partly where this movie succeeds. There is also a fantastic plot twist at the end which is actually very impressive for such an underrated movie. It actually makes plenty of sense despite how far fetched it is.Duplex (2003) is a 9/10 for me!
tilak So viewers are complaining about it being dull and lacking in decent plot.In my opinion plot was good enough which keeps your attention from start to finish.I agree there were not many laughs in this flick but comedy is sprinkled here and there. The old lady is the most evil old hag i have ever seen in a movie.Part of the dullness is due to poor performance from both the lead stars. As far as acting goes the old lady steals the show.Few of the scenes were disgusting and plain awful. The laptop scene was actually hilarious to which most people are complaining about. Writer took liberty with the common sense displayed by the couple, but its quite plausible. Some people just can't say no,and end up being awfully nice most of the time.Entire plot is driven by this very same characteristic of the lead stars. I must say be nice and do not say no to this movie, its quite enjoyable.
SnoopyStyle Alex Rose (Ben Stiller) and Nancy Kendricks (Drew Barrymore) are looking for a place. They find a nice duplex in Brooklyn for a very reasonable price except Mrs. Connelly (Eileen Essell) is the rent control tenant upstairs. Kenneth (Harvey Fierstein) is the real estate agent. Officer Dan (Robert Wisdom) comes in to investigate when the couple keeps getting in trouble over the little old lady.Director Danny DeVito is pushing hard for this slapstick dark comedy. I find little of it funny. I really don't like this couple and I like the little old lady even less. The old lady is too fake and really annoying. It's a lot of fake niceties and passive aggressiveness. I don't like passive aggressive characters sometimes and I really dislike this one. As annoying as it is for the couple, it is more annoying to watch them being annoyed. The more annoying the annoying old lady gets annoying the annoying couple, the more annoyed I got about the annoying antics. I did like the reveal or maybe I like that it was over.
brandon_lee420 April 2010 was the month where I decided to look back at movies I have already watched, and maybe rent them so I can catch the full experience.....again. Surprisingly I came across Duplex and I quickly thought about the fun I had during this movie so I rented it. Ben Stiller is portraying Alex Rose and Drew Barrymore is portraying Nancy Kendricks, both whom are married and live with an old lady from hell that make their lives not livable. Ben Stiller has the best role in this film because his role, Alex Rose, is nothing but funny and at times you can die laughing. He is the most funniest person in this film and people who are saying that the old lady is funnier than him, well my answer to them is WRONG! Drew Barrymore is in her first "funny" role ever and in this film she mostly succeeds with her so called comical genius. She and Ben stiller are probably one of the funniest pair in film mainly because they share the same enemy: Mrs. Connelly, played by Eileen Essell. At the beginning of the film as you are introduced to Mrs. Connelly, you'll think what can this old sweet fart do? Can she even hurt a fly? Well, as the movie progresses you will probably think of ways to kill that sweet little devil for reasons which will drive your mind crazy. The reason why she can't make me laugh is that she is too old and serious. Eileen Essell would've had a bad time dealing with herself on the set of Duplex. At times you feel sympathy for the two couples who are constantly being annoyed by the old lady and funnily, you develop that sympathy for the old lady. The film's plot is silly and old people should not take offense just because their kind is being exterminated. Danny Devito has done a good job of making this dark and funny film which he only could create. I was actually surprised that he has directed the film because wouldn't he be too short to direct it.Alex Rose and Nancy Kendricks are a young, professional, New York couple in search of their dream home. When they finally find the perfect Brooklyn brownstone they are giddy with anticipation. The duplex is a dream come true, complete with multiple fireplaces, except for one thing: Mrs. Connelly, the cranky old lady who lives on the rent-controlled top floor. Assuming she is elderly and ill, they take the apartment but their hopes are quickly dashed when they realize that Mrs. Connelly is an energetic senior who enjoys watching her television at top volume day in and day out and rehearsing in a brass band. A writer, Alex is attempting to finish his novel against a looming deadline. However, each day as he begins to write, he is interrupted by Mrs. Connelly's numerous demands and requests and what begins as a nuisance quickly escalates into an all-out war. When Nancy loses her job and the pair are trapped at home together with Mrs. Connelly, their rage turns to homicidal fantasy as they plot ways to get rid of their no-good neighbor...If you think this film will be sweet look at what they do to the old lady as the couple hire hit men to assassinate the old lady, buy a gun and plan to shoot her themselves, they even fantasize about killing by kicking her down the stairs, throwing her into a river, bulging her eyes out, etc. The film will appeal to audiences young and alike and everyone will have a good time watching an old lady annoying a couple. P.s. The ending was "WTF!" P.P.s To read more reviews, Star Trek, me myself and Irene, etc, click my name. 6.5/10 - Laugh out loud funny.
