God is the Bigger Elvis Audience Reviews

SnoReptilePlenty Memorable, crazy movie
Loui Blair It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
Tobias Burrows It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Haven Kaycee It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
Marian20 This short HBO documentary "God Is The Bigger Elvis" tells the life and career of a former promising actress during the 50's and the 60's Dolores Hart who later entered the monastery to become a Benedictine cloistered Catholic nun.It tells about her Hollywood career that started in 1957 when she starred in a movie together with the King of Rock-and-Roll Elvis Presley entitled "Loving You".This led her to more movies together with another one with Elvis in "King Creole" and others such as "Francis of Assisi","Come Fly With Me" and the 1960 hit "Where Are The Boys?".Then unexpectedly in 1963,she decided to give up her Hollywood career and the engagement she has with her fiancé architect Don Robinson in order to become a Catholic nun to which she has been for more than 50 years while this review is being written. Added to that,a lot of things are explored such as Dolores' personality about her spirituality particularly being prayerful, religious and having faith in God to maintain stability in life; the decision that led her to give up her promising Hollywood career in search for the best relationship with God; what could have been had she not left her career in Hollywood; the relationship that she has had with Don after the engagement was broken off; her current work as the Mother Prioress in the monastery; and the life of the nuns inside the monastery as cloistered nuns.It was definitely inspiring for a viewer to see the journey that Dolores has taken from being Elvis' leading lady to becoming a Servant of God as a nun. It was also nice to see how much temporal earthly rewards she has given up to please God.Finally,it was also nice to see her experience peace and happiness which she probably would not receive in Hollywood.Watch this short documentary and examine your relationship with God.
Desertman84 This HBO short documentary entitled "God Is The Bigger Elvis" is about the life of Dolores Hart.Dolores happens to be a prominent young actress back in the late 1950's and early 1960's and the leading lady of rock n' roll icon Elvis Presley's first film "Loving You".This also happens to be her film debut as well back in 1958 that started a very promising acting career. But in 1963,she gave up the career in Hollywood and broke up the engagement to her boyfriend architect Don Robinson and decided to become a Benedictine nun.Her faith and love of God as a Roman Catholic was stronger rather than pursue an acting career and to marry the man that she was engaged with. This short documentary examines everything from he current life as the Mother Prioress;the status of the career that she has left;the examination of the decision that she made; and the current relationship with the man that she was suppose to marry. It was a joy to watch as Mother Dolores exhibits detachment from this world as she offered everything up to God by giving up the temporal rewards of fame, money and success an acting career could have given her.It also presents the life of the semi-cloistered nun inside the monastery which shows the very different life that they live which is defined by prayer, silence, service and contemplation that is very much different to the modern world. It also presents the struggles that Mother Dolores experienced during her early years as well as the current novices who are trying to be a nun. It will definitely allow viewers to see a glimpse of monastic life and possibly realize of how much people will do everything to allow God to become a major part of their life. Finally,it also allow viewers to examine the amount of love and faith that they currently have with Lord.
RealChristian14 A news article at National Catholic Register about a Spanish celebrity Ollalia Oliveros led me to this short HBO documentary entitled,"God Is the Bigger Elvis". Speaking of the Spanish celebrity, she gave up her modeling and acting careers to become a Catholic nun. The article also led me to gain knowledge of another celebrity - Dolores Hart - who did the same back in the 1960's and the short documentary that explains it all.Dolores Hart happens to be a young American actress. Her film debut starts with the 1958 film "Loving You" wherein she was paired with rock and roll icon Elvis Presley. This started a prominent career in Hollywood. She was given a contract that would allow her to earn at least a $1 million back in the 1950's.She was once again paired in another film with Elvis entitled 'King Creole". She has had other hit films like "Where Are The Boys?" in 1960.Her career was on a great start.Added to that, she was engaged to get married to an architect Don Robinson. Then in 1963,she made an unexpected decision to leave all that to become a cloistered Benedictine Catholic nun for the love of God.This HBO short documentary gives full explanation of her decision, her life compared from being an actress and that of a Mother Prioress as a cloistered nun, and the effects it made in her life particularly the man she was engaged to get married with.It also shows as a glimpse of what life inside the monastery was all about as other nuns got interviewed. We get to hear about Mother Dolores' and the nuns' struggles and fulfillment inside as well as the difficulties that would-be nuns or novices encounter and the role that Mother Dolores plays in trying to help them.We get to realize that silence, contemplation, prayer, singing and many other God- centered activities.Overall,we get to see the former actress' joy and fulfillment as a Servant of God considering she gave up a promising Hollywood career that could have provided her lot in terms of fame, money and success. No question that there is more happiness experienced as a Catholic nun than that of being a Hollywood actress.
valgreet This is the improbable story of Dolores Hart, Hollywood starlet turned cloistered nun. Best know for "Where The Boys Are", Ms. Hart in 1963 seems to have the perfect life: she is young, beautiful, talented, sought after and about to marry the love of her life. But there is something missing...how she finds that missing piece and where it leads her is the substance of the film. Inter-cutting scenes from her 60's film career with her very different life in the past 50 years and in the present makes for a compelling story. The last ten minutes of the documentary will absolutely haunt you as you realize the full implications of her decision to walk away from her former life.
