Momoko is an ordinary girl, living an ordinary life. Ordinary, that is, if you define ordinary as wearing elaborate lolita dresses from the Rococo period in 18th Century France. However, when punk girl and self-styled 'Yanki' Ichiko comes calling, her days as 'ordinary' are most certainly numbered...

Kamikaze Girls Audience Reviews

GamerTab That was an excellent one.
UnowPriceless hyped garbage
Sexyloutak Absolutely the worst movie.
Josephina Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
Paul Magne Haakonsen Despite being an avid fan of Asian cinema, then "Kamikaze Girl" surpassed my preference in movies. Perhaps because I am not that much into the various categories of Japanese street fashion. And I don't really get the Japanese fetish with this so-called lolita fashion. Come on, do they even know the meaning of the word lolita? I doubt it. That being said, then it doesn't mean that I don't find the dresses and outfits nice, because I do. They do look nice. The movie is about Momoko Ryugasaki (played by Kyôko Fukada) who is a loner, a girl fascinated with the 18th century lifestyle and fashion style. She meets Ichigo Shirayuri (played by Anna Tsuchiya) who is part of an all-girl biker gang. It is two entirely different worlds and cultures coming together, with all the diversity, different creeds and life approaches. Of course, the two girls have their clashes, but have to overlook them and come together for a common goal.I found it hard to fully submerge myself into the story and the storyline, perhaps given my lack of interest in these particular Japanese sub-cultures that they focus on in the movie. But if you approach the movie from the aspect of friendship despite your backgrounds, then "Kamikaze Girls" is actually quite alright. The acting in "Kamikaze Girls" was actually good, and people did good jobs with their roles. However, and I say this knowing it is a Japanese movie, that there were times when the acting was overdone and over the top. But hey, isn't that what many Japanese movies are known for anyway? But in overall, then the acting performances were actually good.Being a Third Windows Film release, then I had some fairly high hopes and expectations to the movie, which sadly wasn't fully realized. I found the movie to be sort of pointless at times, and as such found myself drifting off to do other stuff while the movie was running. It should be said, though, that the movie was actually visually beautiful to look at. Lots of nice cinematography and lots of nice scenes throughout the entire movie. And the camera work was good as well."Kamikaze Girls" is a movie of an acquired taste, let that be said.
ebiros2 This is one of the greatest silly movie I've ever seen. It's dumb and not dumb at the same time. Actually it's done quite well. The story is impossible to explain. It's about a girl Momoko Ryugasaki who's into Lolita fashion. She has unending collection of Baby (that's a brand name) fashion, and lives a decadent life style as a teenager. The story makes no sense at all to a westerner but is a spot on portrayal of Japanese subculture. You need to see this movie to understand the movie and the culture that spawned it into existence. One of the best movie to come from Japan, it's a must see if you're an Asian culture affectionado.BTW aho means "dumb" in Japanese.
tedg Teens are cinematic, both ways. They take their identities from the patterns they see. So it is very easy to show or reference those identities in film. Plus, kids think in simple arcs, and that helps the mapping of image to idea. Its almost too easy to make a movie that is about how kids hew to stylistic exclusivity and ironically make the film obsessed with the very same stylishness. That's what this one is. This time around it is teen girls, and we're given the two poles: one girl is a frilly girlie candypop and the other is a spitting, scowling James Dean derivative in a "motorcycle" gang. Both are fantastic exaggerations and that exaggeration is most of the fun.The story is all about the stories these girls tell themselves, and incidentally to each other. At the end, we get a rather nicely wrapped bit about explicit fiction. Along the way, we get three stories about clothes, symbols on clothes and validity. The world we see is as magically abstract as their fantasies of it.What's rather interesting here is how sex is excluded, exorcised from the equation. Oh, its referenced and bound with love, but only as the escape from style. The second act is weak. Stick with it.To enhance the experience, I saw this with a DVD of a Suicide Girls "Tour." This business about the hardening of femininity is pretty profound.Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 3: Worth watching.
Gilles Gravier It's a Japanese movie. You may find the acting a bit caricatural or extreme, but I guess this is due to the history of Noh theater strongly present in Japaneses culture. Past this possible barrier, the movie itself is entertaining. The two main characters are played deliciously by remarkable actresses (again, considering that they are acting in the Japanese style). The movie immerses you into the Gothic Lolita culture, as the heroin is the typical representative of that movement. Lots of insights into the whys and hows of that culture. There is also a fun vision of the Japanese punk subculture, represented by the Yankis. It's a comedy, so you laugh or smile a lot. But the above mentioned aspects also make it a very interesting movie.I'll watch it again. More than a few times.
