Johan Louwet This one came out before the legendary Cannibal Holocaust. I must say I liked this one slightly better story and character wise. Of course the gory scenes where animals (and humans) do get cut open and skinned are not always easy to stomach. I'm glad they didn't shy away from the cruelties otherwise the powerful message would be lost. Whether it is based on true events or not doesn't matter to me. The movie did a good job in following the experiences of Robert Harper and made me want to root for him unlike the white reporters in Cannibal Holocaust. The cannibals here are anything but nice however it is understandable they wanted to defend their land against the gold diggers. But not only the cannibals are a threat the jungle is full of other dangers in wild animals and poisonous plants.

thesiouxfallskid (I avoid giving anything away unlike some other reviews. Best to see this gem unspoiled but do heed warnings.) I was expecting a film sort of like Cannibal Holocaust, an exploitation cannibal film probably with gratuitous gore, plenty of nudity, dumb story, dumber acting, explicit animal cruelty, unconvincing natives in loincloths, chintzy budget, and uh lessee really dumb story and dumber acting and oh I uh already mentioned that. I read some reviews, which I fortunately forgot before I finally saw it a year or two after I had gotten it. Since Cannibal Holocaust is the one we hear about so much, I figured a weak distant cousin to it and well since I didn't like Cannibal Holocaust that is why I waited so long to watch this one. Anyway I have some recommendations. If seeing human bodies ripped open (which I trust are not real ones) and eaten cooked or raw is repugnant, or if seeing full male and female nudity (adults and children) at some length turns you off, or if seeing live animals bashed and sliced open (which really does seem real) angers you, then pass on this one. You won't like it. But if those sorts of things stimulate and excite you, then read on. My personal take of course but the natives are what I would call refreshingly convincing, the story neither dumb nor predicable, and the acting not bad at all, at least not what one expects from such a title and it is a real cannibal film. Enough people get ripped open and eaten so you don't forget that point. No patty cake sissy film that does not deliver. By all means, absolutely get the Shriek Show label version or whatever version that has the entire film - many versions eviscerate it and ruin it, and that is perhaps why we don't hear so much about it. And don't read other write-ups and reviews, certainly not the synopsis in Wikipedia, which will spoil it for you. You may very well find this wonderful gem worthwhile, particularly if you are hardened against gore and snuffing animals like me, but if you do not heed my warnings and watch it anyway and hate it, don't blame me. You have been warned. I give it 10 stars, Note that only about 10% have done so. I should also mention the girl native, actress Me Me Lai. Nice, really nice.

Some of the crew are mysteriously killed and his best friend is lost as well, a tribe of cannibal wild people capture Robert as they torture and humiliate him a lovely cannibal woman helps him try to escape so he can be find his friend and get out.Entertaining, bloody and well made Italian cannibal horror adventure directed by the man who gave the world the infamous "Cannibal Holocaust" known as Ruggero Deoato, this movie serves as a prequel to that movie and is supposedly based on a true story. The performances especially by the gorgeous Mei Mei Lei are good and there's some nice gore effects like a open chest cannibalism scene, the movie does have some scenes of real animal killing such as a bat being fed to a snake and a live Alligator butchering that is quite reminiscence of the Turtle killing scene in "CH". While not as brutal as "CH", this movie is a very good film of the Italian horror genre and of the most underrated.A must see but not if your squeamish! Crap_Connoisseur There is something eerie about Jungle Holocaust and it has little to do with the cannibal action. The eeriness lies with the fact that this film plays like a dress rehearsal for Deodato's towering masterpiece, "Cannibal Holocaust". That is not to say that Jungle Holocaust is not an enjoyable film in its own right but the faux documentary scenario, opening sequence, genital pulling, animal violence and even parts of the score seemed to have made their way into "Cannibal Holocaust".Jungle Holocaust opens with a plane flying above the Malaysian jungle. Robert and Ralph arrive at their remote base only to find it abandoned. Before you can say 'goat entrails', Robert and Ralph get separated, leading to Robert being taken captive by the local cannibal tribe. This begins a long sequence in which Robert is pelted with various objects and walks around naked. When Robert realises that the cannibals intend to use him as live crocodile bait, he takes Pulan hostage and flees.In my opinion, Jungle Holocaust is more of an adventure film than a horror movie. There are violent deaths but the majority of the film deals with the clash of cultures and Robert's attempt to escape from the tribe. And with the exception of some unfortunate wildlife, the body count is unusually low for a Deodato film. However, this film does have its own unique charm. Firstly, it was entirely filmed on location in Malaysia and the cannibals are played by locals. As a result, there are none of the Caucasian cannibals that populate most films in this genre and the scenery is truly stunning. This imbues the film with a sense of realism that the ridiculous story really does not deserve.I have always believed that Deodato is one of the most gifted directors ever to stand behind a camera and his direction here is fantastic as usual. The landscape is beautifully captured and Ruggero's camera work is stylish without being pretentious. The director extracts decent performances from his cast, some of whom would go on to become Deodato regulars. Massimo Foschi is great as Robert and somehow maintains his dignity despite spending a good third of the film completely naked. Cannibal queen, Me Me Lai, turns in another charismatic performance as a charming cannibal, while Ivan Rassimov makes an impression as Ralph. Ubaldo Continiello's score also deserves praise. Deodato certainly knew how to choose composers. Genre fans might be interested to note that Lamberto Bava worked on the film as a second unit director.The film is not particularly gory, with the exception of the animal violence. Deodato claims he did not film the animal killings, which I find somewhat disingenuous as he uses similar footage in numerous later movies. The animal violence is even stronger in this film than in "Cannibal Holocaust". The dead eagle being cut from a crocodile's stomach being particularly gruesome. The producers may have employed more of this type of violence due to the lack of cannibal action. If these cannibals were real they would be dying of starvation. There are only a couple of cannibalistic acts but the effects are well done and there is something almost beautiful about the scene in which a victim's ribcage is used as a cooker. The most startling non flesh-eating moment occurs when a woman gives birth and throws her baby to a crocodile. Nice touch, Ruggero! Jungle Holocaust is definitely one of the better films in the cannibal genre despite the fact that it is not particularly scary. Few cannibal movies have been made with as much skill and attention to detail. Fans of "Cannibal Holocaust" will also enjoy seeing the seeds of that great opus.
