Love Aaj Kal Audience Reviews

CommentsXp Best movie ever!
Sexyloutak Absolutely the worst movie.
AnhartLinkin This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
Lucia Ayala It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
silvan-desouza After the success of Jab We Met, Imtiaz Ali came back with Love Aaj Kal The film also marked Saif's foray into production. The best part of the film is that it has a unique plot which may seem paperthin initially but slowly we realise it's lot more. The film tries to draw parallels between present love story and past and succeeds to some extent. The relationship between Saif and Deepika is well handled, at the start itself we are shown that they are parting away and what follows is a break up party something seldom shown in Indian films. Slowly we are introduced to Rishi Kapoor's past life where again Saif plays his younger version and the film keeps going back and forth and yet makes an appeal. There are some flaws too like Deepika suddenly divorcing Rahul Khanna after 1 day of marriage looks a bit hard to digest, Also the last few reels seem like a melodrama which is in stark contrast to the otherwise tone of the film though the end again is well handled.Direction by Imtiaz Ali is superb Music by Pritam was a big hit, Twist, Chor Bazari were popular, Aaj Din Chaddeya by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was superb, while the rest songs too are good especially Mohit Chauhan's DooriyanAmongst actors Saif Ali Khan does a good job as Jai though he looked too old for it, as Veer he does a great job Deepika Padukone does her role well, though it doesn't demand much from her Rishi Kapoor is outstanding as usual, while Gisseli Monteiro as Harleen is a good new find. Rahul Khanna has an ill defined role but he does well Raj Jhutsi is good while Neetu Singh shows a nice cameo
Peter Young I was quite disappointed by Imtiaz Ali's Love Aaj Kal. So much hype before and after release, and for what? For an ordinary story with nothing new to offer. The film is light and simple, but while in some cases these are the good qualities of a film, in this case, these are actually the film's pitfalls. There is actually no real story to speak of, and the film is slow-paced and at times simply boring. Love Aaj Kal is about a young guy named Jai who just ended his relationship with his girlfriend Meera. He then meets a mature Sardar named Veer Singh who tells him of his own story. From then on, the past and the present run concurrently. Saif Ali Khan plays Jai, and in the flashbacks, he plays the young Veer, whose older version is played by Rishi Kapoor. This kind of narrative style is not one to my liking, but it could have been more interesting had it been used and treated differently. For one, I could not understand why Ali had to cast Khan to play the young Rishi Kapoor. If there was some family connection between the characters of Veer and Jai, it would be more tolerable. Also, one has to note that there is absolutely zero resemblance between Khan and Kapoor, which makes it quite odd that the former played the younger version of the latter. The film is not unwatchable by any means, but it is just not a film I personally would want to watch again. There are good things about it, no doubt, but they cannot save the story from being stale and uninspiring. The songs are quite nice to listen to, particularly "Yeh Dooriyan", which is wonderfully sung by Mohit Chauhan, and "Aaj Din Chadheya". The entire soundtrack really fits the film's mood. Saif Ali Khan repeats his young, carefree Don Juan role as Jai. His character has shades of Karan from Hum Tum (according to me his career-best), where he played a modern, cool and kind-hearted womaniser. Khan in an actor of unmatched comic talent, and though he is a bit old to play a character of this sort, here too he performs well and successfully portrays his character's gradual growth. The problem is, as said, casting him in the role of the young Veer. A younger actor would be a more interesting choice for the part. Deepika Padukone is an extremely pretty and attractive lass, and her smile lights up the screen, but something is missing there. Though she does well in some sequences, she fails to register the growth in her character. Rishi Kapoor is wonderful as Veer Singh, Rahul Khanna is okay as Vikay, and Giselle Monteiro is decent as Harleen.Love Aaj Kal has some nice sequences. It was quite funny to see Jai and Meera celebrating their separation, and then regretting it after realising their true feelings for each other. The dialogues are good for the most part. Loved the scene in which Jo, Jai's new girlfriend who is played by a foreign beauty called Florence Brudenell-Bruce, decides to leave him as she notices his indifference towards their relationship. The film can be an entertaining watch with family and friends, though towards the end it has its share of clichés and becomes very predictable. After watching a charming and entertaining piece like Jab We Met, I had high expectations from this Imtiaz Ali film. Unfortunately, in this one the chemistry between the leads is missing, and though the film grows on you as it nears the end, it ends up being worthy of just a one-time watch. I am sure Ali is capable of making much more than just an ordinary love story like this one. Hope he does so in the future.
Ajit Mahadevan I though "Jab We met" was both enjoyable and entertaining. Movie characters can be over the top (as they were in Jab we met) but the success of a story is their connection to some reality. That's where Love Aaj kal fails...The characters of the key protagonists are just not reflective of what we see in most people...the idea that folks today are too preoccupied with their work and complicate their personal lives is fair and interesting theme to work on...the idea that a couple would break up, do a break up party and smilingly split up is absurd...that's the same issue with the saif (rishi kapoor) character...I am not too sure the 60s were full of people who would spend weeks and months just standing and staring at the woman of his dreams... this juxtaposition of two generations doesn't workThe story is equally absurd...the angle of deepika's character getting married and then realising she's is in love...imtiaz - better luck next time...
karankshah As a movie that compares love in the past to love today, this movie had the potential to be one of the greatest, most important movies ever made. While it's a far cry from being perfect, the subject will hit home to many people, and its treatment is not to be underestimated. The film serves as a direct contrast between love in the golden era, a time when people worked to love, to modern society, where people love to work, and where finding a life partner takes a backseat to this primary objective. the film attacks this directly, drawing out the differences in attitude towards love, and the goals that each of them had in life. The plot moves fast, not so fast to make you uncomfortable, but carries little of the slow moments that remove you from feeling what Jai feels. And boy, does Jay make you feel. Saif Ali Khan's acting is brilliant, keeping audiences sympathetic to his behaviors, his rants (as they number quite a few), and his motivations. His role as a protagonist is well-done, and keeps the audience in the movie.Deepika Padukone's reading is not as good as Saif's though, often coming off as plasticky, but she is mostly adequate. The script holds her up, making her much of a foil to some of Saif's antics, but when she's not playing this role, she comes off as bat***t nuts, where it is doubtful that was the director's intention. The script itself is really well done - for the most part - but this is where my true complaints come in.Make no mistake - this script is excellent. It is quite possibly one of the best scripts to come from Bollywood in quite a while. It, in combination with the cinematography, makes this one of the most subtle movies I've seen in a while. It takes a sharp eye to catch some of the details, a not-so-sharp one to catch others. In combination with the audio, it provides one of the most engrossing stories I've seen/heard/felt. in fact, a scene from the beginning of the movie (spoiler alert, since I've gotten till here without much), where Meera leaves Jai at the airport, and Veer Singh is reminiscing about his own story, is the most stunning sequence I have seen in Indian film, period. So you must be wondering, where is the problem? I answer: It's less of a problem really, and more of a nuisance. The issue is inconsistency: When the script is good (and it mostly is) it flows very well, like water. But in the few moments where it isn't good, it's terrible, it's jarring, show-stopping, and immediately reminiscent cheaper films of the masala variety. The plot is totally understandable - the motivations are clear - but the fact that some of these inconsistencies occur in key points in the plot detract from the overall product in a big way. The subtlety in conversation, the subtlety in story, takes a dive, and here's the worst part of it: very little of it is necessary. It will make some moviegoers scream for the director: "Now why did you have to do that? You used an axe where a butter-knife would have sufficed!" This is the film's largest detractor. In it's defense, as it's likely to be brought up, the film likely needs these more hard-hitting moments to really make a mark on its target. And given it's target, it does very well for itself. If I could have rated it based on how much other people would like it, I would give it a 8.5 to a 9 out of 10, but there's no option for that, so I won't.On other information, the sound score suffers from the same detraction as the script - mostly brilliant, but jarring when not. The music, on the other hand, is sure to be a hit, and Saif's unique dance is likely already very popular. A solid supporting cast with brilliant cinematography makes it a pretty one to look at, and there's no lack of content. This movie is one of those movies that knows what everybody is thinking, and in its job to make their feelings a bit more conscious, it succeeds with flying colors.
