My Reputation Audience Reviews

Phonearl Good start, but then it gets ruined
Intcatinfo A Masterpiece!
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Brendon Jones It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
bfp13108 There is no actress in the world who meets, or has met the performance standards of Barbara Stanwyck. This film was the perfect vehicle for her charm, her empathy, her sadness and tears, her quirky wisdom, her seemingly being lost in a cold cruel world. The supporting cast was iffy at best. Eve Arden appears, weak at best, before her domineering, sarcastic personality comes forth as it did in the earlier Mildred Pierce and many films and TV appearances later. George Brent was at best a poor man's choice for leading man and he plays the same role he has in every other film he's done. The two boys were surprisingly strong. But Ms. Stanwyck, so luminous, a star who was on top of her game for decades. This is her at her best and if you watch the film, you can't help taking your eyes off of her.
LeonLouisRicci A Good Try but not Totally Successful Attempt at Antiquation Dealing with Generations Past with Their Social, Personal, and Now Outdated Traditions.Barbara Stanwyck Showing Her Range as an Actress is all Pent Up Emotion and Struggling to Juggle Personal Gratification among Her Widowed Status that is Accompanied by Two Children, a Domineering Mentally Disturbed Mother, and a Reputation as a Pillar of the La-Dee-Da Upper Middle Class Suburbs. There is an Attempt at Social Consciousness Raising from Warner Bros. and some Ground Shaking but not Fully Breaking from Established Taboos. It is a Gallant Effort with a Soft Focus and a Charming Underpinning Max Steiner Score. Nothing is Satisfyingly Settled, Except by Hollywood Happy Ending Standards. The Film belongs to Stanwyck and the Message is Pulled Back Somewhat for Easy Consumption. George Brent as the Love Interest is Hardly Noticeable but Not Bad. The Rest of the Supporting Cast is Memorable and Deliver Fine Professional Performances.Overall it is Slightly Disappointing with a Quick Wrap Up and the Ending is Weak when it should have Peaked with Power and Realistically Concluded a Strong Story that Collapsed Somewhat, Mostly due to the Lack of Chemistry in Stanwyck's Relationship with Brent.
bkoganbing My Reputation was the second of two films Warner Brothers did with Barbara Stanwyck that they showed to the Armed Forces when they were first made and released to the public in the post World War II years. Why My Reputation was so singled out as was The Two Mrs. Carrolls is a mystery to me. The only wartime connection with this film is the fact that George Brent is in the service. There was absolutely none with the other film.Bette Davis must have been otherwise occupied because this probably was something written with her in mind, especially with George Brent as the leading man. Stanwyck is a recent widow of a man who was bedridden for two years with a mysterious malady and she's if not quite as hot to trot as Vivien Leigh was as Scarlett O'Hara, Barbara is heading in that direction. That upsets her mother Lucile Watson who still wears black mourning for Barbara's dad.A vacation with friends John Ridgely and Even Arden in Lake Tahoe has her meeting Major George Brent who is on furlough. Barbara's in love, but when she meets Brent in his apartment within eyesight of one of her town's notorious gossipmongers, her reputation suffers.Given Code restraints it's kind of hard to write a script with honest and frank emotions. Lucile Watson is portrayed as something of a ridiculous figure and in the end she's almost miraculously rehabilitated in a fine scene with Stanwyck. Had My Reputation been made today, her reputation would have been in shatters, but Barbara would have told the town to do an impossible anatomical act. That would have been believable though as she really doesn't do anything wrong. If this was written originally for Bette Davis I think Bette was wise in passing on this.
Panamint Barbara Stanwyck gets a "10" vote for her performance. She is incredibly skilled and she delivers beyond description. The cinematography is wonderful (esp. firelight scenes). It rates a "10". The classy, orchestrated musical score doesn't rate a "10" but is perfect for this movie.Fine supporting acting. The old actress who portrays Stanwyck's mom is terrific in a very unsympathetic role. Her stodginess provides a rock-hard theme throughout the film. Even the child actors are all very good. Eve Arden- excellent.Brent is a problem. I can't figure out how he can do such a poor job in a role that he practically patented. Who better to hire for the "George Brent" role than THE George Brent? For some reason he just seems uninterested in this film project. The ending of the film is also problematic. It includes a well-staged interior scene with her sons and beautifully filmed train station scenes, but the script at this point becomes truncated and slapdash. This movie is definitely on my "recommend" list due to Stanwyck's outstanding work. It has many good qualities that make it watchable, but is dragged down to an overall "7" due to only two negatives- Brent's lack of effort, and the unsatisfying ending.
