Seraherrera The movie is wonderful and true, an act of love in all its contradictions and complexity
xsellent All of us occasionally enjoy a truly bad movie and when one sees the awful ratings of a film such as this they are tempted to give it a masochistic try. Do yourself a favor and resist the temptation. This wretched mess lacks any redeeming virtues. It has the production values of a 1960's made-for-TV movie that probably would never have been broadcast. Perhaps the worst of its many flaws is that although everyone involved MUST have known what an abomination they were creating, they chose to maintain an an absolute, solemn seriousness throughout. If they had provided a little tongue-in-cheek humor, a few molecules of intelligent self-deprecation, or demonstrated any awareness of the silliness of the whole project, this movie could have developed some cult appeal. Perhaps they were bound to seriousness out of respect for Asimov, but if this were the case, they should have abandoned the entire project long before it could disgrace his reputation. It is a truly awful movie, and not "in a good way".
sonoffi I would have never watched this film from the start to the beginning if Jennifer Burns wouldn't have been so beautiful. This woman needs to get more roles. She can also act. The film was almost as bad as people say, but hey, the budget must have been pretty small. I haven't read the original book and am not planning to but this was not totally a waste of time. Burnings were created using miniatures, but you will get the idea when watching it. Consider watching it if you like Sci-Fi. I do not like Sci-Fi at all (there are of course some exceptions) but I still think this was not complete piece of excrement. It is nice that people make films and don't have just dollars on their minds.
jdm1 Nightfall is one of, if not the, most loved Science Fiction stories of all time. The late Dr. Asimov produced over 500 books, in virtually all genres, which complimented his role as an educator at some of the nation's finest universities. Also widely known as the most effective popularizer of science during his time, Asimov's work Nightfall dishes out extremely cleverly played challenges to the audience's mind. The acting was very entertaining taken in context, and good for a chuckle if the budget-constraint made the somber tone seem a little corny. If the budget and special effects of the original recording's era aren't overly impressive, attention to the storyline leads to a meaningful movie-going experience.
sblarney ... people that don't give a rat's ass about the genre they direct are allowed to direct.in other words, a chick who clearly digs Oprah and Lifetime TV is given hardcore classic science fiction. what's next? A Jane Campion wannabe given the Helm to direct a James Bond Flick? couldn't be any worse, really. This film proves an old adage: ALWAYS CHECK THE CREDITS on a film before wasting any $$ on it.sidenote: Corman is not to be blamed for this. He is only the name of the brand. the Director is responsible for all the bad judgement calls cited beforehand and probably for making sure the sci-fi elements were written out and replaced with the melodramatic crappola.
