SnoReptilePlenty Memorable, crazy movie
Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
sol- Five tales of desperate individuals in contemporary Japan gradually intertwine in this bizarre independent film. In one tale, a man repeatedly kills his wife, only for her to return from the dead with increasing supernatural powers each time. In another tale, an advertising executive tries to make the funniest commercial ever, but keeps failing. In yet another tale, three teens on a crime spree gradually accept their latent homosexuality. In a further tale, a financially troubled father is permanently hypnotised into acting like a bird after his hypnotist is murdered. Finally, Vinnie Jones as a hit-man provides the link between the first four tales. The film is very well edited with lots of attention to music and sound; the ad exec's eyelids flutter to the music beats, Jones taps his feet and fingers in rhythm and so on. The brightly coloured sets (especially the wife killer's home) are great too. For all its ambition though, 'Survive Style 5+' is incredibly uneven. The ad exec tale falls flat but the other segments work for wildly different reasons. The film is whimsical and touching when focused on the hypnotised man and how his doting kids cope; it is darkly comic when focused on the wife-killer; and it is intriguing one when focused on the closeted friends who seem on the verge of spilling all. What exactly what the title means is anybody's guess, and it is hard to think of any overall themes that link the tales together. The film is, however, refreshingly offbeat and uncanny with nary a boring moment to be had. The way the wife-killer and hypnotised man's tales link together at the end is also simply sublime.
Carla I couldn't possibly say enough positive things about this film. This is a MUST-SEE for any film lover. Creative, brilliant use of color & characters - laced into interweaving stories that entertain, amuse & amaze. Rich costumes and sets, excellent acting and well crafted themes..this is a piece to be studied.Full of detail, laughs, & heart. My only wish is that these fellas (who've pretty much only done commercials & other nonsense) keep creating such inspiring works. I could watch this on loop & generate a countless number of flavorful pieces of art. ::love::
jesus_ninja_pants I am not usually a big fan of experimental films but this movie is now one of my all time favorites. This movies has everything; action, comedy, horror, romance, philosophy... you name it. With 5 original and different stories to follow, even if you don't like one aspect of this film, another is sure to catch your fancy.Being a Japanese film this movie has the trademark Japanese type humor, so if you are into random comedy, you should enjoy this film. Even if thats not your style of humor I recommend you check out this movie just as a refreshing change from the typical Hollywood styleMost important though, just have fun with this film; I have read reviews that try to analyze and put meaning to the different events of this film. Why do some people always need to find a moral to every story? I suppose there are ideas to be taken away from this movie, but don't try and analyze it too much, just enjoy it.
suspiria56 Well what can you say... just witnessed this spectacle ... completely crazy...yet still manages to have depth. Not everything works , its a little too long but hey !! who cares when you have plot lines which includes a dysfunctional couple (played to the extreme), repressed homosexuality which blossoms at the end, amazing soundtrack (even the cake song was relevant), a man who is mentally a bird due to hypnotism gone wrong, later taught by his his son to fly due to the son's admiration of his father, Vinnie Jones !? who constantly is interpreted by a Japanese sidekick who never once utters a word of English, the worlds greatest actor (T.Asano), set designs that will blow your mind, spoofs of J-horror/game shows/anything really !! ... i could go on and on... not for everyone but why is this not released in the UK. There is so much more than Ghost stories and Miike takashi (he is still amazing mind)... invest in Survival Style 5+... it makes Tarantino look like Renny Harlin
