Beneath Audience Reviews

DipitySkillful an ambitious but ultimately ineffective debut endeavor.
Portia Hilton Blistering performances.
Kirandeep Yoder The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
Anoushka Slater While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
bruyve Trapped underground with something rather freaky going on; how scary you find that premise depends on how you react at a visceral level to being stuck underground in a confined space. This movie treads rather similar ground to "Descent", though less successfully, as it fails to sustain prolonged tension and (a common failing of horror movies) the characters don't always act or react as you'd expect under the circumstances. There are a few effective scares along the way, but nothing very memorable. On the plus side, the acting is decent and one knows enough about most of the characters to have some vested interest in whether they survive. On the debit side, it is never explained what is causing the transformations into zombie-ish murderers, leaving some events to appear as if at random. Lots goes in the near dark, so be prepared to be squinting at the screen from time to time unless viewing in ideal conditions.Overall, a decent Decent-like horror that passes the time.
rps-2 If you think you would enjoy two hours of people shouting and swearing at each other in the dark, by all means see this movie. Silly, dreadful, unrealistic, absurd, pointless and confusing. I wasn't really sure what it was all about until after I looked it up on IMDb. Oh...it was a horror flick... No it wasn't, it was a disaster flick. In any case it was disastrously horrible. It begins with a bring your kid to work scenario except the kid is a sexpot adult woman and work is a coal mine. Something gives way or explodes or collapses --- thats never made clear --- and this unlikely group find themselves trapped underground. Rather than wait for promised rescue in 72 hours, they decide to explore. Booogie Boogie Boogie!!! At that point I wasn't sure who the bad guy was or why. Or was it possibly a bad gal? Or maybe a bad ghost? But it certainly was a bad movie!
hudsonda4 This movie only got those three stars because of the supporting actors who were actually pretty good. The director went with shaky camera, flashing lights that last too long, in the darkness that lasts too long, and way too long of a build before anything happens. I mean seriously, you put 6 full minutes of flashing lights and darkness into 80 minutes of movie? The main character sucks at acting. And there is nothing scary in this movie. Nothing. Note even a cheap thrill scare. The other reviewers talked about the claustrophobia of the cave....... But that doesn't do anything for those of us who aren't claustrophobic.
TheBlueHairedLawyer Growing up in Nova Scotia, I heard a lot of stories about the coal mines in Cape Breton although they'd been closed by then. Workers often died in gruesome ways or were buried alive. Coal mines are eerie enough on their own, but then you get horror films involved with them? Now that's scary! Take My Bloody Valentine (1981) for instance, it was filmed in a real coal mine. One of the miners went crazy and ate the other workers trapped with him.Beneath takes it to an extreme. A group of coal miners are trapped when the mine collapses, and they're slowly running out of oxygen. Toxic gasses are seeping in, leaving the workers slowly going mad and wondering if they can save their air by killing the others. This was pretty amazing for an independent film, I wish it wasn't so hard to find a copy though. The plot was pretty creepy, it reminded me of a news story a few years back with a collapsed mine; workers dug 'round-the-clock to rescue the miners trapped underground. The soundtrack was a little weird but still was decent, the acting was good and I don't think it was filmed in a real coal mine but it was still highly realistic. With pointless movies that aren't very good at all getting more popular just because they are made by large companies, it was nice to see a decent independent film with a good story.
