No Smoking Audience Reviews

BootDigest Such a frustrating disappointment
Afouotos Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
Matrixiole Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.
Voxitype Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
Shrey Malik A brilliant attempt by Anurag Kashyap to make something different like he always tries. Even for someone who is not familiar with the book this story is supposedly based on, the movie is entertaining. I watched it after googling for "movies like shutter island", and I am not disappointed, movie is worth much more than what it's rating is here. Of course if you love the typical bollywood masala movie, probably wouldn't like it. Keep an open mind and enjoy the movie. Bottom line: one of those bollywood movies which are meant for a minority of Indian Audience, who read the novels these movies are usually based on; or like me, love "mind-f*ck" movies.
rakeshkr-460-588097 Though quality movies never get the attention and appreciation they deserve(thanks to glamor of crappy star studded movies),this is one of the most under rated movie made in India. It's a fine piece of art which carries the viewer through imagination of the protagonist and at points events are expressed very subtly. Anurag Kashyap is the best director around but unfortunately six years back the audience was too immature to understand or value his work. Warning : For those who like glamorous crap from Hollywood/Bollywood this movie can drive them insane. It's for a limited audience who prefer and enjoy watching something like french cinema and quality works of art..
Chrysanthepop Inspired by movies made by auteurs like Kaufman, Lynch etc, Anurag Kashyap makes 'No Smoking'. Given the premise, which is very interesting, one would expect something stunning, especially since Kashyap has assumed director's seat. However, 'No Smoking' fails to meet up expectations. Kashyap's style of making, which is inspired by Kaufman's works, is impressive on the technical side. The editing, cinematography, lighting and special effects are very well done. Vishal Bhardwaj's score is terrific. Kashyap also succeeds in creating a tense and claustrophobic atmosphere but the main problem's are with the script and performances. The basic skeleton of the story treads the path of a traditional thriller where the writers later added elements of surrealism and symbolism. At the same time Kashyap tries to tackle too many themes but they all end up half-baked. John Abraham turns up with a truly abysmal performance. He is wooden to the core and wears one expression almost through the entire film. While Paresh Rawal's Baba Bangali lacks mystery and intrigue. Rawal repeats his hyperactive-chatterbox act. Ayesha Takia isn't given much scope. With movies like 'Black Friday', Anurag Kashyap has proved to be a more than capable film director. However, 'No Smoking' does not meet up with the standards.
mrinaldutta90 for the past one year i have been avoiding Hindi movies..mainly for the reason that these movies have failed to strike a chord neither with my heart nor with my brain...but this movie brings my faith right back into Hindi...i have read many negative reviews about this movie, but i somehow felt that the movie must have something in it to provoke such a reaction,so i finally saw it to find out...yes this is one of the movies in which you will think u have solved the puzzle and the next moment u will be disappointed that this is not the correct solution, and you will be made to think again... and yes this movie has many possible interpretations, this is the most brilliant thing about this movie....this is a David lynch kind of a movie, but it somehow seems to have really struck a chord even more than lynch movies...the acting was absolutely perfect, they did not overact, they did not underact!Paresh Rawal's character was very strong....man this person can act,you will listen to him, even if you don't understand a single word of what he is speaking! then there ...another gem of a performance, and john Abraham....no one could have done the role better except may be Christian bale or tom cruise..he has that suave look and narcissist approach which was needed for the role!the ambiance created by the director..the BM music, the brilliant camera angles, the creation of those really dark and mysterious situations and places, the plot(or the lack of it,which was absolutely perfect, the presence of a solid plot would have spoiled the experience) ,the screenplay(brilliantly done, specially the dreams)...the premise of the movie is 'smoking'..the protagonist K,is a chain smoker and his wife leaves him for that, then provoked by two of his friends he joins a organization to leave his smoking...but then his suffering starts..now i wont move any further...because i will be spilling spoilers!! it provokes a deep anti-smoking sentiment in the viewer....if this movie had been promoted properly it would have made it to the IMDb 250....
